At Galaswim we are often asked what types of starting blocks are the best for competitive swimming?
There are a number of qualifying criteria when it comes to starting blocks. Height above pool deck, angle of the platform, removable for water polo and backstroke handles are some of the main ones but in 2008 FINA (now World Aquatics) also implemented the backstop, which is an angled raised section of the platform that allows swimmers to push off the blocks more effectively.
We have ranked different types of Starting blocks from no to go.
- The homemade or bricks and cement starting blocks. These types can be found in cost-cutting schools and clubs in less competitive pools. Typically someone in the club would offer to build the blocks himself, and arrive on pool deck with a bunch of bricks and a riffled platform that is screwed on to the top. These types of starting blocks are often not according to FINA spesifications and are badly angled, with no backstroke handle.
These types of starting blocks are almost always a disappointment and end up costing more to take out and replace than doing it right in the first place. Ranking 0/5
- The hardwood platform. One step up is the steel and hardwood combination. These type of starting blocks are often made in a steel factory and then galvanised. Generally they are not built according to world aquatic spesifications and are used in schools and clubs that just need to get some height when starting a race.
The hardwood is treated against water damage but will need continued maintenance to ensure that the water cannot penetrate the wood and allow it to swell.
The steel is often rusty and ends up becoming a danger to swimmers. Still this is a better option that bricks. 2/5
- School type starting blocks with stainless steel frames and fibreglass tops.
These sort of starting blocks are quite popular for the less competitive swim programmes. They are generally smaller and closer to the pool so work quite well with primary school swimmers. The frame can be of different types but the one we at Galaswim like the most would be as per the photo.
With the prices of Stainless Steel edging higher these types of blocks have lost some of their allure as they are not that affordable anymore. 3.5/5
- Fibreglass Starting blocks

- Stainless steel starting blocks with movable backstops
The pinnacle of starting blocks would be ones that have movable backstops and are made of stainless steel. There are some starting blocks that are fiberglass moulded with movable lazar cut backstops that have also proven to be excellent.
These starting blocks are superb and will be a credit to any pool deck. Most of them are Stainless Steel construction powder coated with Adjustable raised back foot stop, a Non-slip platform and foot rest, Standard platform size 500mm wide x 700mm long, designed for seamless integration with Colorado Time Systems (CTS) equipment- Design allows internal housing of cables and connections for timing system and confirms to FINA Regulations
